The Choir

„A superb ensemble, highly motivated, homogeneous, sophisticated, euphonious“ - this is how the local press sees the Vocalconsort, one of the „most innovative ensembles in Leipzig“.

Each of the approximately 35 singers has received a substantial musical education (among others, in the Thomanerchor, the MDR-Kinderchor or the Leipzig Academy of Music and Theater) and, together, they enthral as a semi-professional ensemble with their youthful briskness and distinctive joy in music.

Founded in 1999 by Gregor Meyer, the current conductor of the Gewandhaus Choir, the ensemble has established its reputation with both sensitive and  lively interpretations of sacred choral music between the Baroque and Romantic periods, as well as with innovative crossover projects in the more recent past, with the result that one can no longer imagine the Leipzig music life without the Vocalconsort.

Besides their many concert appearances in Leipzig and in the region (among others, in the Gewandhaus, the Thomaskirche, at the Leipzig Bach Festival, the MDR-Musiksommer, and in the Dresden Kreuzkirche), the Vocalconsort also went on several concert tours nationally and abroad (among others, to Minsk and Bosnia), participated successfully in competions (for example, it was awarded a Golden Diploma at the International Robert Schumann Choir Competition), and can be heard regularly on Deutschlandradio Kultur and MDR Figaro.

Since 2007, the Vocalconsort has recorded seven CDs, which show the diverse repertoire of the ensemble (among others, a CD with sacred vocal music by Sethus Calvisius, a CD containing folk songs, and a jazz album with Lennon songs).

One also has to point out that the choir has been involved with different social projects. The Vocalconsort supports, among others, the association „Leipzig Aid to Children with Cancer“ with an annual pre-Christmas benefit concert.
